Evolution and function of effectors of Phytophthora infestans

My research is focused on plant-pathogen interactions.  I am investigating the evolutionary history and functional effects of effector genes from Phytophthora infestans.  Effector genes encode secreted proteins that modulate host responses and have been implicated in pathogenesis.  Some of these genes carry motifs predicted to target them to the plant nucleus after they are secreted into plant cells.  I would like to determine if these gene products are localized to the host nucleus and what their function in pathogenicity is.  Other studies have shown that similar genes are able to down-regulate a plant defense response called RNA-silencing.  This will be experimentally investigated.  In this project, I would like to learn more about the evolution of the effectors and what benefit they provide to the pathogen.  The experiments are conducted using standard molecular genetic techniques and expression studies in plants.
