Missions outer space: RNA in extracellular vesicles produced by the maize smut fungus

I aim to identify and test for functinal importance of the RNA cargo in extracellular vesicles (EVs) produced by the maize smut fungus Ustilago maydis.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are ubiquitous mediators of intercellular communication. There is growing interest in the role of EVs produced by plant pathogens, particularly in delivering virulence factors and modulators of plant immunity. These factors, collectively termed effectors, are commonly proteins but may also take the form of RNA. My work consists of establishing methods for isolating and studying EVs in the archetypal biotrophic pathogen, Ustilago maydis and investigating the biological function of the RNA carried by the EVs.
